One person is dying of hunger every four seconds, warned over 200 NGOs in an open letter to world leaders gathering in New York for United Nations General Assembly.

238 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from 75 nations have taken the initiative to raise the alarm for global policymakers. Oxfam, Save the Children, and Plan International are among the organizations on the list. Global hunger has enraged non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

“A staggering 345 million people are now experiencing acute hunger, a number that has more than doubled since 2019,” they said in a statement.

“Despite promises from world leaders to never allow famine again in the 21st century, famine is once more imminent in Somalia. Around the world, 50 million people are on the brink of starvation in 45 countries,” they said.

According to the non-governmental organizations, an estimated 19,700 people die from starvation every day. This equates to one death every four seconds.

“It is deplorable that with all of today’s technology in agriculture and harvesting techniques, we are still talking about starvation in the twenty-first century,” Mohanna Ahmed Ali Eljabaly, one of the letter’s signatories, said in a statement.

“This is not about a single country or continent, and hunger never has a single cause. This is about humanity’s collective injustice “he stated.

“We must not waste any time in focusing on both immediate life-saving food and long-term support so that people may take control of their futures and provide for themselves and their families.”
