Sandeep Lamichhane, the former captain of Nepal’s national cricket team, has been confirmed to be in Singapore.

He arrived in Singapore from Jamaica and is consulting with a lawyer about legal issues. Sandeep, who was in Jamaica to play in a cricket league, claimed he would return to Nepal in a few days after being charged with rape allegations.

However, it is believed that after consulting a legal practitioner, he changed his mind and flew to Singapore. According to sources, Saroj Ghimire has gone from Nepal to provide legal assistance to the former captain.

After a complaint was registered against Sandeep to the police, the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) contacted him. At that time, Sandeep asked CAN for assistance in the legal process saying that he would come to Nepal soon.

However, he has not communicated with CAN since leaving Jamaica. He is planning to fight the legal battle on his own. According to sources, Sandeep is considering alternatives where he does not need to come to Nepal immediately for fighting the case.

“As of now, he is planning to return to Nepal only if the court convicts and sentences him to imprisonment. Then he will come to Nepal to accept his punishment. However, Sandeep and lawyers are still discussing options to fight the case,” a source close to Sandeep said.

However, despite Sandeep’s preference, there seems no way he can fight the case without being present in front of the court. According to Nepali law, there is no provision one can fight a criminal case by presenting a representative in a court. Hence, Sandeep may arrive in Nepal in a few days.

The police who are investigating Sandeep is waiting for him. As Sandeep himself said that he would come to Nepal and fight the legal battle, the police did not consider it necessary to take any further steps.

“It will be very painful if Interpol has to be informed to arrest the players who are making Nepal known at the international level. As the reputation of the country may be tarnished, it is a respectable option for him to come himself and present himself to the police as soon as possible,” a police source said.

A 17-year-old girl had filed a complaint against former Nepali national cricket team captain Sandeep Lammichane for alleged rape, according to Kathmandu Police.
