A teenage girl was taken into custody by the police on Monday after her in-laws claimed she killed their 18-year-old husband during an altercation over her wearing jeans, an officer in Jharkand’s Jamatara district said.
According to Jamtara Sub-Divisional Police Officer Anand Jyoti Minz, her husband passed away on July 16, four days after falling on a stack of bamboo during the altercation.
She enjoyed wearing jeans, but her husband did not. Since their marriage about four months ago, the tribal couple has fought frequently over the issue.
Pushpa Hembram, a 17-year-old girl was arrested by the police from Gopalpur village after they received the complaint.
According to preliminary investigations, Hembram returned home from fair wearing jeans on July 12, resulting in a new dispute with her husband Andolan Tudu, who told her that married women should not wear such clothing.
The couple emerged from the house during the ugly altercation, and Tudu, who was drunk, was injured after falling on bushes and a pile of bamboo. They did, however, return to their room after some time.
Tudu’s health deteriorated the following morning, and his family members rushed him to a hospital in Jamtara town, where doctors referred him to Patliputra Medical College and Hospital in Dhanbad. He died there on July 16.
“Family members reported the incident to Jamtara police today, accusing Hembram of murdering her husband. We went to the village to look into the matter. We questioned locals about the incident,” the SDPO said.
When asked about reports in local media that Tudu was stabbed by his wife, Minz said he hadn’t seen anything like that.
“The police team even searched for the alleged knife used in the incident, but it was not found so far. We are awaiting the post-mortem examination report,” said the officer.
He stated that the police are looking into the case from all angles.
