A short video clip that shows police cruelty against street vendors selling corn at Baluwatar in Kathmandu Friday morning has gone viral on social media.
An old man and lady can be heard pleading with the city police not to take their stall away in the footage, which was captured by journalist Shristi Kafle. However, before leaving, the police forcibly seize their source of earnings.
The Kathmandu Metropolitan City had previously said that only street vendors were allowed to work beyond 6 p.m.
It had issued a warning that if street sellers were discovered operating before that hour, their goods would be seized.
With the video going viral, the people have already been divided in the saga. Many people are saying that they didn’t expect such behavior from Balen’s government. They are urging that the metropolis should introduce a proper plan and policy to manage these vendors. On the other hand, some are arguing that Balen didn’t have anything to do with this.
Recently, begging has been prohibited in areas within Kathmandu Metropolis.
The Kathmandu Metropolitan City has issued an order forbidding begging on city highways, streets, parks, bus stops, office premises, public vehicles, and other public locations.
