A human predicament is a paradoxical term since we always see only one side of the story and are utterly unaware of the other. Ironically, no matter how minor the issue is, we begin to make all kinds of unnecessary assumptions. This appears to be the case for Deuba, who was caught dozing off during Modi’s visit to Nepal on Monday.
Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba welcomed the Indian Prime Minister in Lumbini on Monday on the occasion of Buddha Jayanti. Following the occasion, both prime ministers offered their prayers in Lumbini and later inaugurated the heritage center. However, among Nepalis, this was not the main highlight of Modi’s visit. On several social media sites, PM Deuba’s weariness and dozing off during the Lumbini program grabbed headlines. Many social media groups mocked Deuba since he is a prominent figure in Nepal. And they began passing judgment on his unsuitable appearance and actions.

Deuba’s tardiness in the Lumbini program outraged Nepali youths. Because he was there as a representative from Nepal to strengthen Nepal-India relations. On social media, the majority of Nepali youth intellectuals began criticizing Deuba’s actions. Unaware of the complete picture, people on the internet made absurd statements questioning Deuba’s competency for the post of Prime Minister.
Well, it is well-known that some of Nepal’s political figures or leaders are incompetent. However, there is a different narrative behind Deuba’s behavior during the Lumbini event. This was brought to light on Tuesday morning. The news of Deuba’s younger brother in the course of treatment at the hospital revealed Deuba’s dozing off in the Buddha Jayanti program. Deuba appears to have been caring for his brother, who was diagnosed with lung cancer. Despite that, he was still able to join the program with a tired mind and soul. Instead of that people were circulating his video of him dozing off and wiping the drools from his face without knowing the whole hidden reality. This demonstrates that Nepalis are always one step ahead of the game. When it comes to creating an unethical context without understanding all sides of the issue.
It’s hilarious that we Nepalis are still unsure of what to laugh at and what to take seriously. However, as a prominent and representative figure, Deuba’s appearance does appear to be unprofessional. Whatever the situation, once a task is accepted, one is obligated to perform it wholeheartedly. Rather than slacking off and exposing their vulnerable side.
