Growing up as a Nepali kids, we all have been pressurized by our parents to do great in academics and have a successful careers. Amusingly, as per our Nepali parents, a successful career is either a doctor or an engineer.

As Nepali kids, we aren’t provided with no other options. It’s either doctor, engineer, or sign-off from the family register. Even kids from low-income families are obligated to pursue such professions no matter how expensive the study cost is. Reason? To elevate their poverty. In achieving such a goal, they urged their kids to focus more on academics than developing any other skills.

What really made Nepali parents so obsessed with these careers when there were plenty of alternative career choices? Well, it’s the tag of Dr. or Er. that mattered the most. What is the reason behind such obsession? Indeed, the time has changed but the obsession remains the same. We have broken the reason behind this:

1. Established sense of belief

There is an established sense of belief in Nepali society that there is no profession greater than that of doctors and engineers. All other professions are under these two. Being a doctor or an engineer accounts for being much more intellectual, disciplined, and focused than other professions. It also helps to set family pride and prestige. The reason people are lured by these professions.

2. A source of prestige and pride

Something about your children being a doctor or an engineer has a different kind of pride among Nepali parents. Perhaps, the proudest thing for them as well as a thing to brag that my kids are very very successful. This also helps to set their standing among their relatives and in society. The level of respect they receive is also very high. No wonder, they are so obsessed with doctors and engineers.

3. A concept of a doctor/engineer= More money= better life

Obviously, one of the highest-paying jobs in the world is doctors and engineers according to Nepali parents. Earning more money is directly proportional to having a quality and standard life. Parents do want their children to make tons of money and have a comfortable life which is guaranteed by these professions.

4. Job security

Nobody wants their kids to become unemployed. These are the fields of professions where job placement is almost secured. The demands for doctors and engineers are never-ending. Parents just want their children to have a secure job and secure life where there is no uncertainty. One of the major reasons why they choose such career platforms for their children.

5. Easy and honorable life

When you have a secure job that is giving you the quality of life you always imagined, of course, there won’t be any financial obstacles and you have an easy life. This is the mentality of every Nepali parent. Plus the amount of respect you have in society provides you with an honorable life. That is why they pressurize their children to have such careers.

6. Some own unfulfilled dreams

Their own fears, worries, struggle, pain, and disappointments are more than enough for them. So, as much as possible, they want to eliminate the insecurities, worries, struggles, pain, and disappointments in the lives of their children so that they don’t have to suffer like them.

In dealing with these struggles, they try hard to educate their kids with the best education possible and that essentially has to be doctors and engineers. They want their children to achieve something that they couldn’t which is the reason why they are so obsessed with Dr. and Er. title.

While these professions remain a great choice and there is nothing wrong with choosing it. What’s wrong is not considering what your child wants and solely focusing on what you want as a parent. Pressurizing your child to achieve something that is not possible for them is wrong. However, as a parent, it’s your job to guide your children to their areas of interest and support what they want rather than what you want.
